How do Interactive Television (ITV) classes work?

The role of the instructor

While teaching a live class in Albuquerque, your instructor, who is a member of the UNM faculty, is also teaching throughout the state in a live Interactive Television session. ITV offers opportunities for interaction between the instructor and the students, as well as between fellow students statewide. Note: Classes that are provided to Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia Laboratory students may not be offered at other Education Centers in New Mexico.

History of Interactive Television at UNM

Instructional Television (ITV) was established in 1985 through a seed grant from Sandia National Laboratories. Media Technology Services (MTS), through UNM Extended University, operated an eight-channel instructional television system located on the top of Sandia Peak.

By 1987, about 25 science and engineering courses were being broadcast. Today, between 40 and 60 courses are broadcast to Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratories, UNM branch sites and Education Centers around the state.

ITV is administered by UNM Extended Learning. In addition to creating access to upper division and graduate programs by providing distance education courses via ITV, a video production studio is maintained at Woodward Hall on UNM's main campus in Albuquerque.

The role of the ITV site facilitator

Services

An on-site ITV facilitator will ensure the classrooms are ready, the 2-way video conference system is functioning, and the right program is appearing in the correct classroom. The facilitator is your connection to ITV at your center. He/she will make sure that handouts and returned assignments are delivered to you as soon as they are received; that homework, papers and tests are promptly sent to the instructor; and that tests are proctored in accordance with UNM policy.

Availability

The ITV site facilitator will be in the classroom at the beginning of class to set up. The site facilitator has a schedule that varies to coordinate with the ITV classes. He/she may not be available during normal business hours of 8am - 5pm. Check with your facilitator for additional contact information. Communication between the instructor and the student is the student’s responsibility.
